Transportation & Lodging Overview

Transportation

Your choice of a wedding location is a first key to being green. Plan your wedding as close to as many guests as possible. Cutting travel miles may be the single most important thing you can do to green your wedding.
Ideas:

  • What if your families are spread across a continent, or across oceans? Having two celebrations in different locations works for some couples. Two people flying -- or even half a dozen when you include parents -- is a much greener choice than asking dozens of friends and relatives to fly.
  • Once you've chosen the location, do everything you can to keep people out of planes and single occupancy cars.
    1. See if you can help guests carpool. For a small wedding, just ask everyone. For a larger wedding, SpaceShare can set up a website to coordinate carpooling for wedding guests.
    2. Be creative -- can you rent a bus, or encourage guests to take the train, and include some of the celebration on their green vehicle?
  • Hotels tend to be very wasteful, but there are many wonderful counter-examples, check out one of many guides to green hotels.
  • Can you cut back the number of rooms?
    1. See if your local friends and family are willing to host?
    2. Do youthful friends want to have a camping party?

    3. SpaceShare can help orchestrate hotel roommate matching and coordinate guests with hosts.
    4. When you're done saving all the resources you can, you might consider carbon offsetting the rest!
